Update On Forced Vaccinations In Maine
By Scott Tips
October 08, 2008

As readers will recall from our last issue of Health Freedom News, NHF Governor Pamela Gerry, R.N. had started a firestorm of controversy by challenging the local school-district practice of sending out threatening letters to parents of schoolchildren “informing” them that their children must be vaccinated if they were to attend school classes. Such letters, Pamela correctly stated, violated State of Maine laws that allow parents to claim either medical or philosophical exemptions from this mandatory-vaccination policy. And through a complaint filed with the State Attorney General, she forced a halt to at least one school district’s practice of sending out these letters.

There is more, though. As Pamela recently wrote in a letter to David Loughran of the State Attorney General's Office, “I am concerned that most other school districts are using material that is out of compliance with the State statutes. As I speak with parents from across the State, they are all under the impression that kids have to have shots to go to school, period. They do not believe me when I tell them otherwise. I'd like to request that your office contact each district and request that they submit the form letter they use to contact parents about vaccination issues. If you don't have the manpower to review each document, I will volunteer to work on this for you, with much assistance from concerned parents who are anxious to do something that can make a difference. If you need to establish probable cause, I will have parents from around the State file complaints with your office.”

“Additionally,” Pamela continued, “I am preparing a list of names of practitioners throughout Maine who have not informed parents that vaccinations are optional, but strongly urged them to submit their children for shots, often chastising them for being resistant. The list is token, as it can be assumed that almost every pediatrician’s office operates using this approach. Rather than go on a "Witch Hunt," it seems it would be more expedient and appropriate, for the AG's office to send a memo to pediatricians’ offices requesting that they submit a copy of the waiver that they offer parents regarding vaccinations. Again, I will be happy to work on this issue with you. If you need a group of parents to file complaints to get a legitimate concern established, please let me know.”

Our work here is important not only because basic health-freedom rights are being violated in Maine as well as in most other States, but children who have compromised immune systems, and who receive vaccines, more often then not go on to develop any of a myriad of symptoms along the autistic spectrum. This translates into an enormous medical and social expense for taxpayers, but an even greater personal tragedy and loss for the families and children involved. (See, e.g., Dr. Natahsa Campbell-McBride’s article at http://www.guthealth.info/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=4&Itemid=27.) In the near future, we will see the rest of these school districts retract their illegal and morally-reprehensible letters.
