H.R.2749 STILL IN LIMBO – CALL YOUR REPRESENTATIVES THIS MINUTE
July 30, 2009

PRESS RELEASE

H.R.2749 STILL IN LIMBO –

CALL YOUR REPRESENTATIVES THIS MINUTE

July 30, 2009

In what the NHF feels is yet another abuse of power, the House Rules Committee is apparently going to permit another vote on H.R.2749 (the Food “Safety” Act) today.  Late yesterday afternoon, the Rules Committee met and approved a resolution, which could be voted on today (Thursday), if the resolution is considered.  The Rules Committee's clarifying amendment does exempt small farmers from FDA registration and paying annual fees but is otherwise the same Bill that was defeated yesterday when the House Leadership tried to jam it down our throats.

Please make your voices heard to your Representatives, demanding they oppose this legislation before it is too late.

As of early this morning, the House is finishing the Department Of Defense spending bill, with five bills on the suspension list including H.R.2749, subject to approval of the Rules Committee rule and its recommended changes.  It is expected that the Rules Committee will give its approval.

Since the Bill received 280 votes on suspension and pass, very likely it will get 218 on the Rules Committee motion, and upon final passage.  So, our victory in previously defeating it will be short lived and passage a strong bet unless we all act now!  This is what happens when the House legislative process is under the control of such anti-health-freedom politicians as Representatives Pelosi, Hoyer, and Waxman.

While the concerns of small organic farmers seem to be more protected, as in being exempted from FDA registration, tracking, and paying annual FDA fees, there is still no exemption language for DSHEA under the cited FDA food laws applying to covered products.

This Bill still needs to be opposed and there is not a moment to lose!  Contact your Representatives right now!!!  Tell them that you expect him or her to vote against H.R.2749.
