In two days we have received two stories from Australia that vividly remind us that the fight against water fluoridation worldwide is a fight for integrity - integrity in science and integrity in public life. The stories are of opposites. They both come from Queensland. One illustrates integrity in public service and the other illustrates a lack of integrity in academia and communications. One illustrates what we are fighting for and the other represents what we are fighting against.
INTEGRITY UPHELD. Demeny, an official at a public waterworks, resigned after 15 years of service because he refused to be part of putting fluoridating chemicals into the drinking water and thereby forcing it on many citizens who don't want it. We wish there were more people like him. See the newspaper report.
Over the years we have met several people who work for water departments and are opposed to fluoridation. The thread that unites them is their sense of responsibility to perform their job with integrity. To date, 36 individuals connected to water departments have signed the Professional Statement -see their names below. We particularly remember Wally Babb, a water plant worker in Dalton, Georgia, who in November 2008 was fired for refusing to place the order for the fluoridation chemicals.
INTEGRITY DENIED. The other story comes from Mackay, Queensland. This is about a stage-managed panel of four "experts" who tout the party line on the "safety" and "effectiveness" of fluoridation as if this was based on fact rather than fiction. It is very hard to believe that these '"experts" could have read the US National Research Council review of 2006, and believe that there are no health concerns. And if they haven't read this definitive 507-page eview on fluoride's toxicity then they have no right to pose as experts on the matter. It is also staggering to hear one of them talk about studies done in Australia when in fact virtually NO health studies have been conducted there on the the health of fluoridated communities.
This story also demonstrates a lack of integrity among those who stage managed this one sided, self-serving exercise in fooling the public.
If you are a glutton for punishment try listening to their glib audio testimony at http://www.aussmc.org/fluoridebriefing171209.php
When we finally end fluoridation it will be the greatest victory ever for integrity in science and public life. We pledge to do everything we can with your donation to make that victory happen.
