Shocking News from PA

URGENT! URGENT! Despite the reassurances that Mike Ewall had been given by sources in the PA Senate, the efforts to introduce MANDATORY fluoridation took an ominous turn yesterday when the PA House voted 150 to 42 for House Bill 1588. This bill mandates optimal water fluoridation in any public water system that serves at least 500 households.

It is incredible to me that 150 legislators could vote for mandatory fluoridation for the whole state of Pennsylvania within 3 months of the publication (March 22) of the three year review of fluoride's toxicity by the National Research Council (NRC) and within a month of publication of Bassin's paper on the relationship between fluoridation and an increase in osteosarcoma in male teenagers. Presumably, these legislators have heard nothing about the recommendation by the NRC panel that the EPA determine a new safe drinking water standard goal (MCLG). Have they simply been duped (mesmerized?) by the salesmen from the dental lobby? Whatever the reasons for their extraordinary lack of due diligence on this matter it is important for every PA citizen (and maybe people from outside PA as well) concerned about this issue to communicate with the PA State Senators and make sure that the Senate version of this bill does not succeed.

To add to the grim news, before passage of the House Bill, amendments were made which made it even worse. The amended bill http://www.legis.state.pa.us/WU01/LI/BI/BT/2005/0/HB1588P4439.HTM

shields water companies from lawsuits and allows them to increase their rates to cover their costs.

ACTION: If you live in Pennsylvania please email your State Senators now and tell them not to vote for this mandatory fluoridation bill. Put "Oppose Mandatory Fluoridation Bill" in the subject line.

As this is partly a numbers game even if you wrote one sentence: "Please do not vote for this bill" in the text, it will be counted.

If you have more time, during what is a holiday weeked for many people, please ask them why they feel that they can do to the whole population of the state what a doctor cannot do to an individual patient - i.e. force them to take medication. Have they exercised due diligence in this matter?  They should at least have an aide read the NRC review of fluoride's toxicity (see our home page for details of this report http://www.FluorideAction.net). You might also remind them that, while dentists know a lot about teeth, their assurances about the rest of our bodies are meaningless. Tell them not to be fooled by those who assert that the NRC review has nothing to do with water fluoridation. While the NRC review did not look at the benefits of water fluoridation (which have been wildly exaggerated) much of what they examined is relevant to artificial water fluoridation. The NRC panel report adverse health effects at, or close, to 1 ppm and their exposure analysis indicates that many people drinking fluoridated water are exceeding the "safe" dosages derievable from the current MCLG (4 ppm) let alone what the new MLCG will be when it has been reduced to by the US EPA. This is a totally inappropriate time to be gambling with the health of the whole state.  Here are the email addresses of the PA Senators.
