DHEA Supplements Threatened Once Again

Legislation to classify Dehydroepiandrosterone, or DHEA, as an anabolic steroid, and thus add it to the list of controlled substances has been reintroduced in Congress. Never friends of health freedom, Senators Grassley, McCain, and Durbin have introduced S.762. In the House, Congressman Peter Roskam has introduced HR.1249.

DHEA dietary supplements have been on the market for over 20 safe years. They are derived from a plant in the wild yam family. DHEA is a naturally occurring hormone that has a proven scientific record of having a wide range of health benefits for older Americans and people with chronic conditions with few if any side effects. DHEA may even be helpful for such conditions as obesity, cancer, and Alzheimer's disease, as some evidence strongly suggests.

In the last Congress, health-freedom advocates were able to prevent this legislation from passing Congress. A grass-roots advocacy letter-writing campaign will once again be needed to block this threat to access to beneficial supplements containing DHEA.
