AER Still Not Acted On
by Lee Bechtel, NHF Lobbyist
October 2, 2006

The Congress has recessed for the mid-term election break with the Senate not having passed S 3546, the Dietary Supplement and Nonprescription Drug Consumer Protection Act, otherwise known as the dietary supplement Adverse Event Reporting legislation.

While supported by the NNFA, Consumers Union, and Council for Responsible Nutrition, to name a few, health freedom groups, with the NHF actively leading the lobbying and grassroots advocacy effort, have thus far derailed the expected Senate passage of the AER bill. This is good news. Action might still occur in the post election Congressional session when the Senate and House go back to work on November 9, 2006, until they recess for the year.

NHF members are again encouraged to continue sending opposition letters to their Senators on S 3546, and to their Congresspersons on HR 6168. Both bills, under the pretext of needing improved consumer supplement safety, would repeal the DSHEA law and regulate supplements like prescription or over-the-counter drugs.

As Congresspersons and Senators up for election circulate around their respective States and Congressional Districts on the campaign trail over the next 5 weeks, NHF members and health freedom supporters are encouraged to attend any of these events and ask candidates about their position on either of these bills. Personally hearing from people is the most effective way to help defeat this legislation, this year and for the future.
