S. 2470

Classifying DHEA As An Anabolic Steroid

Bill Overview

Petition

Act on this poorly titled, self-serving, pharmaceutical industry "Citizen Petition" which would reclassify all dietary-supplement weight-loss claims as disease claims.

It is critical that consumers push to amend this proposed bill to exempt its application to dietary supplements, or there will be more regulation, higher costs for supplement manufacturers (domestic/foreign), and higher costs for consumers.

This is a back-door attempt to limit the potencies of vitamins and minerals, with terrible consequences for consumers, manufacturers, and health food store owners. Do not let California set a precedent.

Would grant the FDA the authority to impose civil monetary penalties for filing petitions with the agency that the FDA believes to be based on false evidence. The bill would restrict the current right to freely petition the FDA to change policy or decisions, or review its own actions.

Would establish a federal government national health insurance program funded by a value added tax of five percent on every product or service sold in the US.

Both are identical to last session's Food Safety Admin bills, sponsored by Durbin and Rep. DeLauro.

Sen. Richard Durbin (Asst. Minority Leader for the Democrats) has reintroduced S.654 under the pretext of the need for food safety protection, thereby creating a new federal food safety agency. This is very dangerous legislation for consumers of dietary supplements as it would repeal the DSHEA Act of 1994, and if signed into law, as currently proposed, dietary supplements would be reclassified and regulated like drugs. The companion bill, H.R. 1148, was introduced by Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro. Both introduced similar legislation at the end of the last Congress. This "Food Czar" legislation needs your opposition. Please use the petitions to contact your Senators and Congresspeople now.

This legislation will wrongfully classify DHEA as an anabolic steroid, causing it to be listed as a controlled substance. In 2004, DHEA was exempted from the controlled substance list. Take action now to save this natural hormone from being classified like heroin and cocaine.

Petition

Thousands of Americans every year are diagnosed with chronic or terminal diseases for which an FDA approved treatment has not been effective, or for which no approved treatment exists. H.R.2717, the Access to Medical Treatment Act would permit the use of therapies that have not yet been approved or which may never be approved by the FDA, under the supervision of a state licensed practitioner.

Safe and effective treatments are being used in Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, and Canada but cannot be used here because of outdated FDA policies. Instead of receiving “unapproved” FDA medical treatments for chronic or terminal diseases in their own community, the only option for Americans who can afford it is to leave the country. Medical treatment options should not be unjustifiably restricted.

A collective educational grassroots effort is needed to ensure passage of this legislation.

Legislative Status:Has 10 House sponsors and is pending introduction in the Senate by Senator Harkin.

The Dietary Supplement Tax Fairness Act, H.R.2486, is pending before Congress. The bill recognizes that meal replacement and dietary supplement products have shown through research and historical use to be of valuable benefit to human health and disease prevention. Such items cannot now be claimed as an authorized medical expense under federal tax policy. The bill would treat expenses for certain meal replacement and dietary supplement products as being tax-deductible medical care costs. This tax deductibility option is long overdue for millions of Americans.

Legislative Status: Has 6 sponsors and pending in the House Ways and Means Committee.

This extremely important bill re-introduced by Rep. Ron Paul, that the NHF has previously supported, will stop the FDA & FTC longtime efforts of censorship and restriction concerning access to supplements and supplement information. Truthful supplement claims will no longer be restricted. Please support Ron Paul, the NHF, and health freedom and act on this bill.

Creates a tax credit of 80% for the purchase of prescription drugs for persons age 62 or older, when not covered by insurance, and allows the purchase of prescription drugs from Canada and other foreign countries via the Internet without FDA interference.

Would legally allow persons over the age of 62 to voluntary refuse to participate in any part of the Medicare program.

Identical to last session's H.R. 1545

The bill would allow people to claim a medical expense deduction for meal-replacement and dietary-supplement products that have been or do, in the future, qualify for FDA-approved health claims. H. R. 1545 was referred to the House Ways and Means Committee. At this time, no similar Senate bill has been introduced.

Senate bill 242 and its companion bill House bill 380, will allow consumers to purchase and legally import FDA approved drugs, manufactured at FDA inspected facilities, from 19 foreign countries, including Canada.
