The NHF-Ireland formed in the Summer of 2010 under the supervision of NHF president Scott Tips when we put together a core group of eight dedicated activists from around Ireland. Unsure of a campaign to launch us onto the public domain, we decided to hold an open meeting to get a general idea of people’s concerns on various subjects. On the 6th of November 2010, we held our first public meeting in Cassidy’s Hotel Dublin and were very pleased when over 50 people attended the talk. When asked the question of what they felt the NHF could campaign on in Ireland, the overwhelming response was on Ireland’s water-fluoridation program.
With this in mind the NHF-Ireland is about to launch with a massive campaign solely focused on the fluoridation issue and to raise awareness of the controversy surrounding this mass medication. Our own Minister for the Environment Mr. John Gormley has publicly stated in the past that fluoride was not safe for consumption by babies and that their milk formula should not be made using fluoridated water. He also stated that it was linked to bone cancer and dental fluorosis. John said that if the Green Party ever got into Government, he would end this practice immediately. The facts are that the effects of fluoride go way beyond cancer and dental fluorosis but to have a minister of Government publicly state this is something we intend to use to our benefit.
Unfortunately, John Gormley is no different than any other politician around the Globe and when he did finally get into government on the 24th of May 2007, he completely back-flipped on the issue and nothing happened. It seems he is no longer concerned about our Irish babies and our ever-increasing cancer epidemic. We all drink water and most of our bodies are made up of water. You cannot avoid fluoride in Ireland in the 21st Century. Water fluoridation must stop. We demand the freedom to choose fluoride-free water in Ireland.
This campaign is unfortunately not the first to be fought in Ireland on the fluoride issue but hopefully it will be the last. Having looked at the past unsuccessful campaigns that have been launched here, we have decided upon a completely new approach that has proven successful elsewhere. This plan will be unveiled at the appropriate time in the near future.
At our twin events in Cork and Dublin, Ireland, held on the 20th and 22nd of January, called The Truth Agenda, Scott Tips spoke both times on behalf of the NHF-Ireland before full-capacity crowds. Danielle and Lloyd Bryant did a masterful job of manning the NHF booth, while Simon Murphy, Ian Crilly, Sarah Carney, Brian Price, Ashley Eastwood, Colin MacDonald, Alan Keenan, and Jason Murphy made sure that the meetings ran smoothly and were as well-attended as they were. The day after the Dublin event, Scott then spoke briefly at our special NHF-Ireland members’ meeting, where we also strategized about our anti-water-fluoridation campaign. All in all, it has been a very productive time. But, this is only the beginning.
