In 1920, Prohibition was imposed upon the United States by a misguided Constitutional amendment making alcoholic beverages illegal. In the following thirteen years, criminal syndicates arose and the prison population grew by 350%.  Anyone with a copper boiler and some pipe could build a still. The moonshiners were not so careful about their recipes for Rotgut, Panther Sweat, White Lightning, and a hundred other names for danger. Everyone knew of someone who went blind, was paralyzed, or died from bootleg liquor.

The punch in alcoholic beverages comes from ethyl alcohol, a two-carbon molecule from the fermentation of natural sugars and grains. We have been given a tolerance for it in moderation, and it is even recommended in the Bible: “Drink thy wine with a merry heart, for God now accepteth thy works.“ (Ecclesiastes 9:7 and  Proverbs 31:6&7)

But Rotgut often held ethanol’s deadly brother, methanol, a single-carbon alcohol fatal in even a one-ounce dose. It comes from the fermentation of cellulose, wood. Some moonshiners, though, were not careful to separate the grain or grapes from the stalks (cellulose), just throwing everything into the vat and ignorantly filling cemeteries and hospitals.

Now the same deadly chemistry is poisoning millions of innocent victims worldwide by the makers and ignorant sellers of aspartame. Aspartame releases methanol, then formaldehyde and formic acid as you digest it. Hear what the illustrious Dr. Woodrow Monte, Ph.D, for twenty-five years Professor of Nutrition at Arizona State University, declares in his powerful new book, While Science Sleeps A Sweetener Kills:

“Something very wrong is going on, something that is killing good people and causing untold suffering to families and communities around the world.  Never has such a high percentage of the population been afflicted with so many tragic and wasting illnesses.  In the past thirty years, a group of diseases has reached epidemic proportions in the United States and many other countries. These diseases … include multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer’s disease, breast cancer, lupus erythematosus, rheumatoid arthritis, melanoma, and autism, a once rare birth defect. … [M]ankind endures a plague whose point of origin distinctly coincides with the Food and Drug Administration’s 1981 approval of aspartame – an artificial sweetener containing methanol, which is metabolized into deadly formaldehyde within the brain and sinew of all who consume it.”

The exquisite and pivotal laboratory work done by Professor Maria Alemany is proof conclusive that aspartame and, therefore, methanol does turn into formaldehyde within the living organism.  Dr. Alemany … clearly and unequivocally demonstrated methanol’s evolution into the formation of formaldehyde modified proteins and DNA. How strange it seems now that anyone would ever doubt that formaldehyde is produced from methanol ….”

As you digest methanol it converts to formaldehyde and formic acid. My husband’s company, American Formula Corp., supplied formic acid as an additive to formulas to strip epoxy coatings from industrial floors. It had to be added at the point of use, because if it were included in a drum of epoxy stripper, it would eat right through the container. Formic acid is also fire-ant venom.

Reproductive Toxicant and Carcinogen

Methanol is an acknowledged reproductive toxicant. The California Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment ruled that the safe dose of methanol is 23,000 micrograms/day – the “acceptable” dietary intake. That is what you get in a single “diet” drink. A microgram is a millionth of a gram.  A gram is 1/28th of an ounce.

Why bring up “diet” drinks? Because the sweetener in them is often aspartame.  All aspartame contains a significant quantity of methyl alcohol. So, a can of “Diet” Coke or Pepsi is your “acceptable” limit if you play football and weigh 250 pounds.  But suppose you are a 50-pound child?  Now you’re in overdose; and the long-term health consequences are nightmarish, so bad that in 1995 the FDA compiled a chart of 92 reactions, from headaches to death, gleaned from over 10,000 volunteered consumer complaints. Addiction to “diet” sodas is shown by the mountains of them stacked in supermarkets.

In 1985, Food and Drug Administration (FDA) toxicologist Dr. Adrian Gross testified to the U.S. Senate that aspartame violates the Delaney Amendment forbidding any cancer-causing ingredient from being introduced into foods. He testified that aspartame causes brain cancer and is therefore illegal.

FDA Compliance Officer Jerome Bressler authored the damning Bressler Report, identifying more cancers, such as adenocarcinoma and sarcoma, from   aspartame consumption. He asked, “If the FDA violates its own laws, who is left to protect the public?”

When aspartame’s original manufacturer, G. D. Searle Co., was investigated it was found they had filtered out data they did not want FDA to see. There is no telling how many cancers Searle found and hid. But now Searle’s sealed teratology (birth defect) studies have been found, showing methanol causes neural tube defects, in turn explaining the epidemic of autism, cleft palate, and other permanent problems. Two multi-year studies at the World-famous Italian Ramazzini Institute of Oncology confirmed it is a “multipotential carcinogen.”

Neurosurgeon Russell Blaylock, M.D. evaluated this research and warned:  "The study released in the European Journal of Oncology by Morando Soffritti and co-workers should terrify mothers and all those consuming aspartame sweetened products. This was a carefully done study, which clearly demonstrated a statistically significant increase in several types of lymphomas and leukemias in rats. Both of these malignancies have increased significantly in this country since the widespread use of aspartame. … The type damage was a duplicate of that associated with cancers. Along with this most recent study, this means that drinking a single diet cola sweetened with aspartame could be responsible for developing lymphoma or leukemia.”

The late Dr. H.J. Roberts said “the hazards of methanol exposure to an infant from the breast milk of a mother drinking aspartame sodas can be profound, and if she consumed it before the infant was birthed, the consequences could be disastrous.” I have hundreds of letters from mourning mothers confirming his dire words.

Aspartame and Birth Defects Searle’s studies on aspartame’s birth defects were damning, so they cut a deal with the FDA not to let the public see them. Before he died, Jerome Bressler pleaded with me to find these sealed studies that had been removed from his report. Thanks to Dr. Madelon Price, who worked with Dr. John Olney at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri, we located the omitted material and I returned it to Mr. Bressler and put it on the web at www.mpwhi.comThese contain FDA admissions that aspartame causes birth defects. Dr. Woodrow Monte says the neural tube defects in infants are often manifested as a grotesquely disfiguring malformation encompassing a spectrum of disorders ranging from cleft palate, through spina bifida, to the always fatal presentations of horrifically deformed skulls with exposed or missing brains. Dr. Monte retrieved four additional birth-defect studies and said, “This deceit was compounded by the complacency of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration personnel, who kept secret internal memos and corporate research data from as early as 1974 that would have revealed the discovery of multiple neural tube defects in the infants of animals fed aspartame.”

Dr. Ralph Walton, a psychiatrist and researcher for 60 Minutes, showed that 92% of independent peer-reviewed studies reveal problems with aspartame. Now he is conducting a study on aspartame birth defects and asks that anyone who has ever used aspartame during pregnancy, to please contact him () for a data form to complete, or retrieve it from

Aspartame Blindness

Aspartame’s chemical derivatives destroy the optic nerve, so you go blind. In 1986, attorney James Turner and the Community Nutrition Institute petitioned the FDA to ban aspartame because of this danger of blindness.  The case went all the way to the Supreme Court, but unfortunately politics won out over health.

In 1987, the late Dr. Morgan Raiford, ophthalmologist and specialist in methanol toxicity, observed:

“The human visual pathway admits ninety percent of our intellectual input to the brain and central nervous system. All of the learning processes are centered during one’s lifetime. The mechanism of this tragic damage to the human visual system from this product is and has been known for over a decade that visual loss takes place. When this drug enters the digestive tract, largely the upper portion, this ASPARTAME molecule spins off a by-product known as METHANOL or METHYL ALCOHOL. This product enters the blood stream and when these portions reach the highly metabolic region of the OPTIC NERVE AND RETINA, PARTIAL ATROPHY CAN AND DOES TAKE PLACE.

“The vision cannot do without oxygen and nutrition for more than ninety seconds without revealing some damage. Total loss of vision is present and there is no return. In the very early stages in which is referred to as the "wet stage," treatment can be given and will reserve the destructive pathology to the OPTIC NERVE and RETINA. This must be in the mind of the physician and he must understand the chemical ongoing process. The writer has seen many cases where the patient was allowed to go to the degrees of blindness, as this diagnosis of OPTIC NEURITIS was rendered, as the term IDIOPATHIC NEURITIS OF OPTIC NERVE was given ….”

Dr. James Bowen, M.D., surgeon and biochemist, explains how aspartame gradually accumulates in the body so as to kill us:

"Only after longer aspartame usage does liver damage cause blood methanol levels to measurably rise because the liver mitochondria are so damaged that the liver no longer quickly processes either methyl or ethyl (drink) alcohol. Then the acute methanol poisoning is directly measurable from lab results, as the blood methanol level elevates. This entire sequence or "toxic axis" begins with your very first dose of aspartame. Both acute and chronic poisonings from this methanol toxic axis, and other additive and synergistic aspartame poisonings, steadily accumulate in the aspartame consumer.”

The Front Groups

Aspartame is big business and its profiteers form front groups with nice-sounding names such as the Calorie Control Council (CCC), which has been defending the poison for years with absolute allegiance to its sponsors. In its own words: "The Calorie Control Council, established in 1966, is an international, non-profit association representing the low-calorie and reduced-fat food and beverage industry. Today, it represents 60 manufacturers and suppliers of low-calorie, low-fat and light foods and beverages, including the manufacturers and suppliers of more than a dozen different dietary sweeteners, fat replacers and other low-calorie ingredients.” In my words: They never met a poison they didn’t like.

Neurosurgeon Dr. Russell Blaylock exposed the CCC in a letter to The Miami Herald (April 24, 2004), “The Calorie Control Council, a front group for the NutraSweet Company, recently suggested that aspartame was safe for women to use during pregnancy, as well as by those with serious liver disease and phenylketonurics. This is the most serious breach of public trust in the history of this nation. There is not one long-term study of aspartame safety ever conducted on the offspring of pregnant women consuming aspartame. Yet, there are numerous studies indicating aspartame could pose a serious danger to both mother and infant.”

Still, the CDC / National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) paper on Methyl Alcohol (Methanol) argues "methanol occurs naturally in humans, animals and plants … Foods such as fresh fruits and vegetables, fruit juices, fermented beverages and diet soft drinks."  What CDC/NIOSH ignores is that fruits and vegetables contain the antidote – ethanol – which takes methanol out of your body safely.  Aspartame manufacturers and their front groups cite tiny amounts of methanol in fruits to prove it is harmless, but never tell us that ethanol neutralizes it.

As the National Health Federation has noticed at Codex Alimentarius committee meetings, the aspartame front groups are ever active in protecting Codex aspartame standards despite the high cost to the public health.


We Are the Guinea Pigs

Dr. James Bowen wrote the FDA that aspartame is mass poisoning of the World. (See, citing in part Dr. H. J. Roberts, who called aspartame a global plague and authored the 1038-page medical text, "Aspartame Disease: An Ignored Epidemic."

Dr. Monte explains in his book, While Science Sleeps:  "The entire US population has been a study group, with no knowledge or forewarning of its participation in a ghastly experiment. Using this data may be the very best way that its cancer causing potential can be determined. Toxicologists could only dream of such a large blind research population, which normally would make the job of the epidemiologist quite simple. Unfortunately many toxicologists owe their allegiances to various industrial and pharmaceutical groups who insist they waste their skills proving how safe new chemicals are rather than showing the havoc they might cause." Welcome to the International Society of Guinea Pigs and Lab Rats!

Dr. Monte also lamented that, "The innocents who have suffered and died to unknowingly test the safety of aspartame and, thus, methanol, must not be allowed to have given their lives in vain." Since Aspartame was released in 1981, Alzheimer deaths have increased 10,000%, Autism 2500%, and Lupus 300%, while autoimmune diseases have reached epidemic proportions. Multiple Sclerosis, Type II Diabetes, and Rheumatoid Arthritis are all out of control too.

The Bottom Line

According to Prop 65, the safe daily dose of methanol would amount to a single diet soda. Yet, since aspartame is cumulative, even a daily soda presents a risk of cancer. FDA’s own hidden records admit aspartame causes birth defects and cancer. Three studies by Dr. Soffritti at the Ramazzini Institute show cancer risk for liver, lung, and kidney, and declare aspartame a multi-potential carcinogen.


A Harvard study, the longest and strongest according to the authors, links aspartame to cancer.  Dr. Adrian Gross, FDA toxicologist, said aspartame causes cancer.  So did twelve other toxicologists who asked the FDA to withdraw aspartame approval because of its links to cancer. Nevertheless, petitions for an aspartame ban have gone unanswered.

Perhaps Dr. Ralph Walton, former Chairman of the Center for Behavioral Medicine at the Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine, said it best, “The FDA's stubborn adherence to their original, and controversial, approval of aspartame is unconscionable. The public must be informed that the approvals, both in this country and Europe, are based on highly questionable industry funded research.
